Independent Australian game reviews

Game Reviews

Welcome to PLAY UPDATE HUB's game reviews. We play, analyse, and score games across all major platforms with a transparent 10-point scale. Our reviews are written by Australian gamers for Australian gamers, and every score is justified by a detailed breakdown across gameplay, story, visuals, performance, sound, and replay value.

A 10 means masterpiece. A 1 means unplayable. Scores are not averages: they reflect the overall experience after thorough testing.

Our Review Process

We play games thoroughly before scoring them. Our reviewers spend significant time with each title, testing all major features and returning to them after the initial hours to see how systems hold up. We never claim to have played a game if no genuine review took place.

Scores are based on the full experience, not just first impressions. That means completing the main path where possible, exploring side content, and testing performance across different conditions before a final verdict is written.

  • Reviewers receive clear editorial guidance and a category breakdown before starting.
  • Every review is edited by a second team member for accuracy and clarity.
  • Review copies are disclosed when supplied, but they do not influence scores.
  • Potential conflicts of interest are stated in the review itself.

Score Breakdown

Each review includes a breakdown across key categories. The final score is not a simple average; it reflects how those parts combine into the overall experience.

Category What we assess
Gameplay Core mechanics, responsiveness, challenge balance and fun factor.
Story Narrative quality, character engagement and how well the story supports the game.
Visuals Art direction, technical graphics and consistency of the visual style.
Performance Frame rate, stability, load times and the presence of disruptive bugs.
Sound Music, voice acting, sound effects and how audio supports the experience.
Replay Value Longevity, meaningful side content and reasons to return after the credits.

Each full review also includes an overview, pros, cons and a final verdict. We never fabricate specific scores for games.
